The next morning involved scouting. Lots and lots of scouting. Patrol routes and compositions were determined, and ambush points planned. The standard goblin patrol comprised a hobgoblin leader, a mage, two Archers, and five fighters. Sometimes that would vary with the addition of a rogue, or no mage and more Archers. Once in a while an all fighter patrol came through, but those were rare.
Setting a trap for a patrol, the twelve person group made quick work of them. They targeted the mage first, then the hobgoblin. With their leader dead, the rest panicked and ran. They didnât get far before being cut down by the twins. The orc siblings, with double-headed axes and no armor, were quick on their feet.
The third ambush went poorly. Win missed his arrow shot on the mage. The goblin cast a protective spell on itself, then sent a potent blast of force into the Duelist, Zale. The hobgoblin directed the Archers with practiced ease, hitting both Alicia and Randall. Once they retook the initiative and destroyed the patrol, Brek and Graybeard healed everyone.
Deciding to call it a day, the group returned to the cave. The XP and loot would have been good, though with a twelve member party it came out to be rather paltry per person: 348XP and thirty silver from the three patrols, and 22XP and 1 silver from the four scouts.
Ladrón was now Level 5, with three levels in fighter and two in rogue.
Day two the goblin patrols became more beefy. The war party leader wasnât stupid. Three missing patrols meant someone was killing them, and that meant they needed to be stronger. It also meant both Haarlock and Win had to kill four times as many scouts as the previous day. The new patrols comprised the hobgoblin leader, a hobgoblin lieutenant, one mage, four Archers, and eight fighters.
These patrols were much harder to defeat. With so many goblins to deal with at once, it required the mages to expend most of their spell slots between two patrols. Calling it quits after the second, the group returned to the cave. It took the mages the rest of their dailies to heal everyone up.
The experience was better this time: 366XP and fifty silver per person.
Ladrón gained two more levels. He didnât gain many hit points, but every bit helped since the animal had so few.
The increased levels turned the raccoon into a capable combatant. Sneak Attack, combined with the Vicious Bite Feat, made Ladrónâs first attack powerful indeed.
At night, the party discussed the plan for the next day. Around 150 goblins remained in the camp. Far too many for them to handle at once. Since the patrols almost doubled in size the first time, it was reasonable to assume much larger patrols would become the norm. With the difficulty today, the goblins might get lucky and kill one of them.
They discussed waiting for more adventurers to arrive and form an even larger raiding party. The problem with waiting was more goblins might show up.
